The Quantique team from the Eastbourne & Wealden area, having won the Sussex County Final, were Highly Commended at the South East Regional Finals recently.
Effectively this is second place! They were the only company to be mentioned in this way, after the winners were announced.
This is an excellent result as it is the first time that a team from Eastbourne & Wealden has progressed to the Regional Finals and so to be recognised as Highly Commended is superb. Very well done to all in Quantique.
This brings to a conclusion the highly successful year for Young Enterprise in the area. If you would like to be involved in 2015/16 commencing in the autumn, as a school / college, as a business advisor, as a volunteer or as a sponsor, then please see below.

In the third year, since the re-launch of Young Enterprise in the Eastbourne & Wealden area, the standard of company performance and presentation at the recent finals was again a step above previous events. All teams provided a very professional presentation of their results and achievements, which once again left the audience very impressed.
Three teams of an outstanding bunch were even more outstanding. Quantique from Bishop Bell Church of England School, Rainbow Enterprises from Cavendish School and Erudito from Willingdon Community School swept the board, winning all of the awards between them. As a result, they staggered home with all the silverware, carrying the impressive cups and shields presented.
Overall winner of Best Company of the Year went to Quantique from Bishop Bell. Quantique, who have made and sold innovative products, made from Scrabble pieces, such as cufflinks, with the letters denoting initials, also won the Best Branding, the Best Website and the Best Presentation awards. In addition, Brandon Relph, also from Bishop Bell School, was highly commended in the Young Achiever awards, which was won by Amir Haydari from Cavendish School.
Quantique will now represent the local area at the Sussex County finals and we hope they will progress from there on to the regional, national and even European finals. A full list of the winners for each award, together with our general sponsors is as follows:

The Eastbourne & Wealden Young Enterprise board are delighted to announce that one of the companies from the area, Quantique from Bishop Bell School, who won the area finals for Eastbourne & Wealden, have now been crowned County Champions.
This is a fantastic achievement for the Quantique team, overcoming strong opposition at both the area and county levels. Also for the Eastbourne & Wealden area as the Young Enterprise company scheme was only revived in the area three years ago.
Quantique also won the Best Product / Service and the Best Trade Stand at the County Finals awards. They now go on to represent the Sussex area in the Regional finals. These are to be held in Guildford Cathedral on the 17th June, where an original copy of the Magna Carta is currently on display, providing an added attraction
Thanks and praise must go to the Centre Lead for the Young Enterprise scheme at Bishop Bell School, Emma Treneman. Also, to Gordon Piggott and Charles Uwakeneme, the Business Advisors provided to Quantique by the local Young Enterprise board.
As another highly successful Young Enterprise year draws to a close in the Eastbourne & Wealden area, we would like to extend a very sincere thank you to all of our supporters. Without you this excellent scheme for young entrepreneurs and the encouragement of enterprise could not continue.
In particular, we would like to thank the Centre Leads at each of the schools and colleges, and their supporting head teachers and other staff. Also, the business advisors who have worked so well with each of the teams.
A big thank you to all of our sponsors. In addition to those that supported a particular award, as listed above, we would also like to thank the Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring the finals event, Sundyne HMD Kontro Sealless Pumps for sponsoring the launch event last autumn, The Arndale Cente and the Asda Superstore, for hosting the trade fairs, and the Federation of Small Businesses for all their support.
In addition, we would like to thank all of our other supporters, including Edward Dickinson who produced the finals programme and posters, the ELIM Family Centre for providing the finals venue, and HSBC Bank.
Last, but not at all least, the Eastbourne & Wealden board, who should thank themselves of course, would particularly like to thank Wendy Gorham, our local Young Enterprise Manager for all of her support throughout the year. Please contact her (07920 763651 / wendy.gorham@y-e.org.uk) if you are a local school or college and would like to be involved in the programme next year.
For all those that have kindly supported us throughout the year, including those mentioned above, please come along to our thank you event. This will be held in the impressive Old Court Room at the Eastbourne Town Hall, from 6pm on Thursday 18th June.
Please join the local board for light refreshments, convivial conversation, short speeches and the presentation of certificates to our sponsors and supporters.
We look forward to seeing you there. (Please RSVP to Mary (mary@itsveryeasy.com) so that we have an indication of numbers). Thanks.
Of course, to continue the good work in the next academic year, commencing in the autumn, we continue to seek sponsors for the local company programme. Therefore, if you can contribute or would like to participate with Young Enterprise in any other way, please email Martyn Billing: martyn@calibremarketing.co.uk.

As this Young Enterprise year comes to a close, please join us for the presentations by each of the participating companies / teams, the judging, an inspirational guest speaker, the last trade fair of the year and the local area awards, plus refreshments!
The finals will be held at the ELIM Centre, on the corner of Upperton Road and Hartfield Road in the centre of Eastbourne (BN21 2ET) on the 22nd April commencing at 4.00 pm. We hope to see you there (please RSVP to mary@itsveryeasy.com).
In addition to the presentations by the company members, whilst the judging is taking place, we have a young, award winning, guest speaker. The Gingerbread Man, Sam French of Sam’s Kitchen, will be talking about how, having tried a gingerbread man in the famous London department store, Selfridges, he thought ‘I can do better than that!’
Having trialled more than 100 recipes before settling on the one to use Sam set up his business at the age of just nineteen. He now supplies top retailers and corporate clients such as British Airways.
There will also be a trade fair, where the companies will be displaying and selling their products to those attending plus refreshments will be served. The awards will then be presented, which include the following:
We hope that you will be able to attend. If so, please can you just send an email to our local board secretary, Mary Piggott (mary@itsveryeasy.com) so that we can plan for numbers and catering.
All the Fun of the Fairs
Following a very successful trade fair in the Arndale Centre, a further event was held at the Asda Superstore in the Crumbles near Sovereign Harbour. Once again, a number of the local Young Enterprise companies took a stand and sold their products to the general public. Thanks for the support to all those that came along.
During the fairs, the teams receive feedback and encouragement on how they are displaying and selling their products. The winners of the awards were as follows:
Best Trade Stand (sponsored by the Arndale Centre) – Quantique from Bishop Bell
Runners up Best Trade stand – Euridito from Willingdon Community School
Best Customer Service (sponsored by Bespoke Training Eastbourne) – Rainbow Enterprises form Cavendish
Mystery Shopper (Sponsored by Bobsters) – Rainbow Enterprises form Cavendish
The next and last event in our local Young Enterprise year is the finals, as mentioned above. However, there are then regional, national and international finals for those companies that progress.
Primary Schools – Take The Fiver Challenge
The Fiver Challenge is Young Enterprise’s nationwide challenge for primary schools. This free entrepreneur programme gives primary aged pupils a taste of what it’s like to set up their own business.
Embedding a culture of entrepreneurship within our schools and colleges will help young people to develop their business awareness, skills, confidence and experience to help them make informed choices about their future. Teachers that have participated said:
The primary students are pledged a start up capital of £5 for one month and they are challenged to set up a mini business to create products or services they can sell or deliver at a profit.
The Fiver Challenge is running in the month of June 2015 but schools can register now! It is free to participate.
At the end of the month, finances are tallied up, loans repaid and legacy donations given. This means that the £5 loan is repaid + 50p Legacy donation so more students can participate next year in the Challenge. Students then decide what to do with the extra profits. Youth organisations (for pupils aged 5 – 11) can also take part as well as schools.
Why sign up?
Register to participate now by visiting www.fiverchallenge.org.uk

We Are Now Wealden
If we are honest, our title of Eastbourne & Wealden Young Enterprise has been something of a misnomer! Whilst we have had excellent support from schools and colleges in Eastbourne since our re-launch in the area just two years ago, we have not had representation from the Wealden area.
We are pleased to say that has now improved. We are delighted to welcome Hailsham Community College and Heathfield Community College to the company competition this year so making our title that much more relevant!
This year’s programme is fully underway with the master classes, where company / team members learned about their particular job function held recently. These included classes for the managing director, marketing director, finance director, website master and in presentation skills (applicable to all) and were held with the kind support of Sussex Downs College. Thanks to all those that led the classes.
Our next events are the trade fairs which are to be held in the Arndale Centre on the 7th February and at the Asda Superstore in the Crumbles Retail Park on the 6th & 7th March. Please come along and support our local companies, where they will be selling their products or services from their stands on the day.
Win a Car Competition
As per the item in our last newsletter, we were very pleased to have been selected by the Arndale Centre as one of the charities to benefit from their annual Win a Car competition. We manned the stand in the centre on Sunday the 30th November and sold nearly £350.00 worth of tickets.
Thanks to the generosity of all our supporters that purchased tickets, both in advance and on the day. Also to the Arndale Centre, as all the money we took for the tickets will come to our funds to support the Young Enterprise scheme in our area.
Sponsor Support
Welcome to a new sponsor this year, Bobsters, the gift and souvenir shop at 223 Terminus Road, Eastbourne. Jimmy Keeley, the proprietor, has kindly agreed to sponsor the Mystery Shopper award at our trade fair in the Arndale Centre.
Please show your support for our kind sponsors. If you can contribute to the costs of running this excellent scheme in your local area, please contact Martyn Billing: martyn@calibremarketing.co.uk / 01323 487330 / 07721 058409.
Master Classes Make Maestros
Managing Directors and those with finance, marketing and associated responsibilities such as website development and social media were the function subjects of the recent master classes held for those on the local YE company programme. A class on presentation skills was also held, an essential subject for the finals next spring.
After some icebreaking exercises, those attending then split into groups according to the function they are undertaking or will participate in on behalf of their company. Interactive master classes on each subject then followed with the evaluation forms confirming that all those attending found them very useful.
Our thanks to Sussex Downs College for hosting the event. Also to Tim Cobb of Cobb PR, Caroline Cole of Savoir Faire Accounting, Joel Fielder of Switchplane, Mina O’Brien of Ditzy Media plus Gordon and Martyn from the YE Board for running the classes.
A social media master class was run this year for the first time. As this function now has such importance in promoting a business, particularly with a consumer product, this was a great addition to the master classes offered and our thanks go to Mina for suggesting and running this course.
The next event in the company year is the trade fair in the Arndale Centre on Sunday 7th February when this year’s companies will be selling their products and services. Please put the date in your diary to attend. Thanks.
Come Buy from YE Companies
The companies participating in the Eastbourne and Wealden programme this year will be selling their products and services to the public at local locations in February and March. Please come along and make some purchases to support them. The main Eastbourne & Wealden event is in the Arndale Centre on Saturday 7th February
Being the first weekend in February, this allows a great opportunity for purchasing those Valentine’s Day gifts and also presents in advance of Easter etc. Many of the items will be very affordable and can be purchased and taken away on the day.
Eastbourne & Wealden will also be organising a trade fair at the Asda Superstore in the Crumbles centre near Sovereign Harbour. These will take place on two days in March, Saturday the 7th and Saturday the 14th. Again your support for these would be much appreciated.
In addition, a number of trade fairs are organised throughout the county by other local Young Enterprise boards, a full list is as follows:
Sunday 25th January: Churchill Square Shopping Centre, Brighton
Sunday 1st February: Holmbush Shopping Centre, Shoreham
Saturday 7th February: Arndale Shopping Centre, Eastbourne

Sunday 8th March: Asda Superstore, The Crumbles, Eastbourne
Saturday 14th March: The Orchards Shopping Centre, Haywards Heath
