|In a very closely fought contest at the Amex Stadium in Brighton on 25th April, the Unum team from Eastbourne College showed their strengths. The 15 strong team participating in the Young Enterprise Company Programme won the awards for Best Website, Best Branding and Best Presentation before going on to be awarded Best Company for Eastbourne and Wealden.
Closely following behind them were the New Oceans team of four girls from Mayfield School who won the Best Team Interview and Customer Service award and were highly commended for the Best Website and Best Company Report. In addition the Managing Director and Finance Director of New Oceans, Baillie Paterson, won the Young Achiever award.
Scribble, one of the two teams from Gildredge House School won the Best Product or Service award and were highly commended for their Presentation, as their Powerpoint slides stood out from the others. Scribble had designed and printed colouring and puzzle books to help children and adults de-stress. The first was geographical to encourage an understanding of other countries and their cultures, while the second focused on a range of future careers.
This year was the first time the Eastbourne and Wealden teams shared their finals showcase with Brighton & Hove and Lewes and so there were a total of 11 teams competing for the awards and places in the Sussex finals. The teams from Eastbourne & Wealden won five out of the seven functional awards. The judges said that each year the standards are rising and so it becomes more challenging to determine the winning companies.
All of the Eastbourne and Wealden teams were all very well prepared with the fourth team, Vertex from Gildredge House, also giving a well thought through and confident presentation without needing to refer to notes. In the last two months they have changed their product line from eco-friendly gardening kits to school survival kits for students about to go into exams, as all the contents were approved by exam boards and designed to take the stress out of exams by helping those less organised in their preparations.
